What Really Is Boudoir Anyway?

Boudoir photography began in the early 1920s at the end of the women’s suffrage movement. Not surprisingly, this art form is closely tied to a time of female empowerment, when women wanted to reclaim their bodies and lives for themselves. This artistic movement has often been misrepresented and misunderstood, seen as “glorified pornography”. Boudoir is a far cry from this male-gaze dominated photography; rather it is a self love art form, crafted in implication versus explicit content. While often used as a romantic gift for one’s partner, I believe Boudoir is just as much of a gift for one’s self. A celebration of our bodies, no matter what stage of life we are in. A reminder that “we are more than our bodies, but we should not be shamed for appreciating them or our sexuality”- Emily Ratajkowski. A way of reclaiming control of our bodies and our sexuality should we choose to express it.
As many of you know, I have spent the last 2 years working for a skydiving company in which I had the incredible opportunity to participate in several engagements through photography. While my start with photography came from skydiving and proposals, I wanted to focus my skills on something I was personally passionate about. I have always tried to use my soap box to encourage self love and body appreciation in women. As a new mother, and mother to a daughter, this mission is even more important to me. We deserve to love and celebrate our bodies in every chapter of our lives. I believe one of the most powerful ways to do this is by showcasing your body as the work of art that it is.
For a long time I have dreamed of a creative outlet that would also allow me to continue on this mission of spreading self love and confidence. I have finally found a way to do this, and have recently been able to launch a new business in the form of Boudoir Photography. If this has ever interested you, or if you have ever been curious at all, please reach out to me for more information. Whether these photos are for your partner, or just for you, I hope to be part of your self love journey by combining two of my life passions.
